June 14th, 2010What is the thickest gauge cable I can use to make XLR (Neutrik NC3MX/NC3FX) cables?
Q: Does anyone know what the thickest gauge cable I can use to make XLR (Neutrik NC3MX/NC3FX) cables? This is going to be used to send signal to/from a digital crossover to amplifiers, not for a mic or instrument.
A: Probably around 16 gauge. Maybe 14 gauge if the insulation isn’t too heavy. The problem is getting the complete cable through the rubber boot and into the connector. If the wire and insulation together creates a cable that’s too heavy it’s very difficult to do. Unless you’re going a fairly long distance, there’s no real need for a large cable.
