Q: My band is performing a small concert probably about fifty to seventy people will be there. We don’t know what we need though. We have two guitarists, a drummer, a bassist, and a vocalist. We have the effects machines we need, but all we have besides our instruments is our amps. How many watts should we need? It’s indoors, in an auditorium. We have the cables that go from instrument to amp, but I heard about something called a snake? What’s that? Thanks.
A: depending on what type of music and the size of the place your playing in youll need 5 to 10 watts per person.
A snake is what they use to plug the mics into for drum set and most times you need 10 mics for just the drums. snakes have 10 or more 1/4 jack plug ins and a few returns that have one big cable that runs to the mixer.
the thing you might have a problem with is your guitar amps will need to be 60 to 80 watts each just to keep up with the drums and about a 100 watt amp for the bass any less and you will not hear the guitars and bass over the drums.
any more than that and youll over run the drums.
so im not sure what your goals are and what you have but your going to need to try and rent a pa system
you need
mics for each singer + cables
mics for your guitars and bass + cables
a snake with 24 ch and a few returns
enuff mics to mic your drum kit out.+ cables
a 24 ch or 12ch mixer depending on how you mic it out
2 power amps no 1 500 watts and 1 1000 watt 1
a monitor for each person on stage
and mains for the people who come to see you.
it takes alot to do it right and alot of money
dont get me wrong theres other ways to do it but the best bet is a pa system.
and another thing you might want to try seting up and playing some place so you can adjust your amps to the drums so it sounds right and try to give your self lots of time to set up and do your sound check.
Im not sure what area your in but if your close to were I live I have a big pa system and would give you a hand if you need it.
