A keynote speaker is someone who is an expert in a particular, focused field or area such as communications, teamwork or business ethics. A keynote speaker is generally hired to bring a new, invigorating point of view to a team or company project. Consequently, there are some important issues that should be addressed before hiring any keynote speaker.
The first question for a keynote speaker should revolve around the topic of the presentation. What experience, knowledge and viewpoint does the speaker bring to the presentation? Do they have a fresh, updated approach to the topic in question? What is their personal standing on the subject matter? It’s important to ensure that the speaker’s point of view coincides with the intended audience.
The next question to be addressed is what type of presentation you want to be delivered. Do you want a workshop style presentation or would you prefer an audience address? The speaker’s presentation style should be one which could be received by the audience with maximum effectiveness. Does the speaker incorporate visual aids or power point presentations, do they encourage questions and audience participation, or do they operate with more of a lecture-style approach? Do they incorporate both?
Ask about their concepts of entertainment and of professionalism. Do they strike an equal balance? Can they keep an audience interested while imparting professional and practical advice?
Ask for references. What the references have to say can be key when hiring an appropriate keynote speaker. Did the speaker connect to the audience? Could the audience relate to the speaker and the information given during the speech?
Another question to ask when hiring a keynote speaker for your team or project is how receptive the target audience will be toward the speaker. A predominantly male, conservative audience will require a like minded individual in order to capture their full attention and respect. A young, liberal female audience would probably respond with distaste toward the same speaker. You must ensure that the speaker is of a common mind with his/her audience.
Another important aspect when hiring a keynote is the cost involved. Everyone is on a budget these days, but it is also important to hire a quality speaker. The price a speaker charges is in direct correlation to the importance of the message to be imparted and the capability of the speaker to deliver the speaker in the most profound way for maximum effectiveness. The cheapest speaker may not be the best. Alternatively, the most expensive may not be the best either. You must use discretion when it comes to incorporating a keynote speaker, as you are hiring this person to serve a purpose, mainly as a motivational tool to increase the productivity of your organization. The cost of the tool should not outweigh the finished product, but neither does using a substandard tool produce the best outcome.
The final decision when hiring a keynote speaker incorporates many different, but interlocking aspects. If the speaker can connect with your audience while providing a memorable and rewarding experience at a reasonable cost, you can benefit by greatly increasing your company’s productivity.
