December 13th, 2009Question about Live microphones? are clip-on mics good enough for shows?
Q: I’m thinking about a solo live act where I play guitar and perform vocals but a single person in front of a mic stand might make for a boring show. I really hate those headsets dancing pop stars use so I wanted to know if those clip on mics they use for talk-shows would work well on stage?
Denise, thats a great idea, the only thing is I have to play guitar. Would multiple wireless mics placed around the stage interfere with each other’s signal?
A: A clip on mic is not a lot of good if you’re moving a lot, or turning your head, as they’re quite directional and so you lose sound and also get clothes rustling noise. You can get very, very small mic capsules on wires which sit against your cheek these days (similar to the headsets that pop stars wear, but very much smaller and less obvious), and plug into a transmitter which you wear on your belt. Or, tape the mic capsule over your ear (we do this for musical theatre) so that it sits on your cheekbone – that way you also get bone transmission of the sound as well. Various wireless mics placed around the stage are OK so long as you put them all on different frequencies, but you’re still going to have to stand in front of one of them to be heard, it’s difficult to get an even coverage from “boundary” mics. A radio mic that you’re wearing is going to give you the best sound. If you want to mic your guitar (are we talking acoustic?) you can use a regular radio mic capsule as well and hang the transmitter off your guitar strap.
