September 10th, 2010Humming noise is coming from my speaker?
Q: I hook up my speakers (sony floor speakers, horn tweeter, mid, and 8 in woofers in each) to my harmon kardon avr 145 and try to play and the front right speaker works great but the front left hums and the reciever shuts off, why is this? same goes for the surround sound right speaker but the center and surround left work great. Is this fixable?
A: Sounds like you need to get your receiver fixed.
Try unplugging the two speakers that are making the noise and see if the receiver still shuts itself off. If it does, then it’s a receiver issue. If it doesn’t then it may be a an issue with your speakers. To test this, you will then need to connect the left speakers to the right side. If there is no issue, then it is surely your speakers.
Whether it’s a speaker issue or a receiver issue (my bet is the receiver), this is a problem that was more than likely caused by playing your receiver at excessive volumes for too long.
If you find that it is a speaker issues, you can take this opportunity to buy better speakers than Sony. Harmon Kardon is a nice brand that puts out good sound. Why someone would waste that receiver’s potential by connecting Sony speakers to it is beyond me.
