Pattern Condenser Microphone
help with condenser mics?
Q: i want to buy a condenser mic for a reasonable price for recording vocals and guitar, would that be good? or would a live mic be better? i want to get a condenser because it seems to have better recordings, but my only problem is phantom power.
what exactly does phantom power do and do you need it like NEED it for condenser mics? i want to get a plug and play usb condesner mic which is pretty cheap and ive heard that you need phantom power for condensers but im not sure why..
if you can can, can you give me any tips?
Im planning to either buy the Samson C03U for about $99 or the Audio Technica AT2020 for around $100+
if you have any other/better mics you would recommend, please tell me. thanks

A: You do need some form of power for condenser mics, with Phantom being the normal route, but some mics (Like the AKG C1000s) can take a battery. I don’t personally like the AKG though – I have had some and sold them – I think they sound a little harsh.
The mics you mention are fine, I like the Oktava mics, and the rode mics seem to be well likd as well.
If you are looking at quality though, you really need to think about something etter than a PC sound card to get the audio into the PC – as a start something like the M-Audio Fast Track Pro 4×4 Mobile USB which will also provide the phantom power for the mic,
