October 20th, 20102002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Problem?
Q: Jeep driving fine, switched from 4WD FT to 2 WD and shortly after noticed it felt like front wheels rubbing on something and if I went to make L or R turn car would “jump” and difficult to turn. Took to mechanic, said problem was actually that Left rear wheel was locking up and he thought problem was rear differential. After mechanic looked at it and spun tires manually while up on rack, problem resolved. Driving fine now. Transmission mechanic thought problem might have been in transfer case and wheel got “bound”, said unless problem occurs again, keep driving. Anyone heard of this or know what might be happenning ? It has Selec trac and I don’t usually shift between the 4WD modes very often. Usually able to leave in 2WD (most of time) or into 4WD FT (occasionally).
A: years ago Tojo company insisted that you put your car into 4WD every few months to spin up and lubricate the front diff assy and seals. do you have free wheeling hubs? pays to run them disengaged-prevents transfer case problems reaching the wheels. Again, an occasional re-wetting of parts is not a bad idea, if you do it on a loose surface-sand, grass, dirt, snow. NOT rock/compacted gravel/tarmac/cement.
