December 7th, 20101999 rav4 w/ 138,000 miles, 3 owners, 1 accident… not a good buy?
Q: i saw this 1999 rav4 for sale and here’s the specs:
- 3 owners (ill be the 4th)
- 1 accident (front impact, back in 2002 w/ the 3rd owner, vehicle is still functional after the impact..nothing serious..and carfax reported this info on 1/18/2008)
- 138,000 miles
- automatic, 4 door, 4×4
- power steering, power windows, etc (see more details below)
- selling for $5,995 from a dealership
is it a good buy?

any tips on what to check before i purchase this suv (provided that this is a good buy)?
A: One of the keys to pricing a car is to effectively rate the car as the price will vary widely based on condition and mileage. Mileage is pretty obvious. You should base condition on a Carfax report (which would also help catch any odometer fraud) and your own review. And you have done all that – unlike most car shoppers. Before you buy your final step should be an inspection by a qualified mechanic if you know of one you trust.
There are a bunch of places to check car prices on the Internet. NADA guides is one – but since they are owned by the car dealers association I never recommend them. KBB is another. Driverside.com is a new site and they have a couple of extras – great data showing price based on mileage; DriverSide Estimate where they search actual listings to find what cars are actually selling for in local markets; and estimates for trade in pricing.
Also take a look a the DriverSide cost of ownership – service, gas, insurance and even depreciation to see how the price will drop over time. I find that most folks look at the one time sales price – not the ongoing costs which continue long after you buy your car.
