What Are The Best Studio Monitors For a Home Studio?

Q: I am trying to set up a home recording studio and I am currently trying to find a good pair of studio monitors.

I was thinking of getting these http://www.provantage.com/behringer-b2031p~7BEHR002.htm
but I’m not sure what else I need.

I am looking for something between The $100 and $200 range.

Also what other Equipment will be needed to plug them into a desktop computer?

A: The setups that come with a computer at Dell.com aren’t bad. Try looking at tigerdirect.com or newegg.com. Hopefully the monitors you get will come with cables, but check if it fits your system.

M-Audio Dsm-2 Active Studio Monitors Pair $1498

M-Audio Dsm-2 Active Studio Monitors Pair

M-Audio Studiophile DSM2′s are studio reference monitors engineered to provide superior monitoring for discerning audio professionals. Each DSM2 speaker’s design results from a collaboration between 2 powerhouse music technology companies: M-Audio and Digidesign. The M-Audio DSM2 monitor features DSP-based crossover management, an assortment of onboard digital EQ controls, proprietary high-grade driver designs, and analog and digital inputs for high-resolution audio up to 24-bit/192kHz. With stunning accuracy, clarity, and dynamic range, the Studiophile DSM2 monitor makes world-class studio reference technology accessible to a broad array of creative and professional environments.Redefining the World-Class Near-Field MonitorOver the last 20 years, M-Audio has achieved critical acclaim across diverse lines of music production tools. They attribute much of this success to the fact that each product group operates like a small boutique shop within the organization. The Los Angeles-based engineering team that designed the M-Audio Studiophile line applied their expertise to the DSM drivers, power amps, cabinetry, and electronics. Along the way, they worked with top recording engineers and producers to refine the Studiophile DSM monitors for optimal performance.Powerful DSPM-Audio engineers worked closely with their counterparts at Digidesign to bring their experience to the Studiophile DSM2 monitor. The powerful onboard DSP engine controls a complex 4th-order digital crossover. It also provides clear and accurate audio imaging by compensating for phase differences between the two drivers at the crossover point. This makes the DSM2 deliver perfect acoustic alignment and exceptional imaging. And as a result of exhaustive tuning and listening sessions, the DSM2 monitor provides incredible tonal accuracy, excellent dynamic range, and exceptionally low distortion.Tailor the Speaker to Your RoomYour listening environment and speaker placement greatly impact monitor performance. To ensure optimal monitoring in your studio, the onboard DSP also manages a broad range of customizable performance filter settings that allow you to tailor each speaker to your room. DSM2 offers DSP-controlled high and low frequency roll-offs along with an assortment of EQ settings, from Acoustic Space to Q, to help optimize the speaker for placement within even the most difficult acoustic environments. High-Class DriversTo ensure excellent sonic clarity, the Studiophile DSM2 monitor features a custom-designed, 8-inch anodized aluminum cone woofer that actively reduces distortion by pushing the break-up mode out of the pass band for maximum low-frequency detail at any volume level. The 1-inch ferrofluid-cooled tweeter is made of a soft Teteron dome, which strikes the perfect balance between efficiency and damping to produce a controlled high-frequency breakup out to 27kHz. The drivers and their carefully matched power amps provide a wide 42Hz27kHz frequency response and outstandi

ADAM Audio A7 Powered Studio Monitors (Pair) $999

ADAM Audio A7 Powered Studio Monitors (Pair)

The A7 powered studio monitor, ADAM’s best-selling and award-winning powered monitor, combines a high-frequency, transient-friendly A.R.T. ribbon tweeter with an innovative, state-of-the-art 6.5″ woofer. The result is an extremely accurate monitor with all the clarity, detail and spectacular imaging traditionally associated with the ADAM name — but at a price that makes the speaker accessible to nearly all home and project studios. The ADAM A7 monitor speakers are powered by two 50W RMS amps (one per driver). The front panel sports both a power switch and volume control. The rear panel houses controls for tweeter level and two shelving filters for high and low frequencies. The ADAM A7 speakers also feature both balanced (XLR) and unbalanced (RCA) input connectors, allowing it to be used in almost any audio application. Accelerated Ribbon Technology The A.R.T. (Accelerating Ribbon Technology) tweeters and midrange units take a completely new approach in kinematics to move air and improve the quality of music reproduction. Based on the original works of Dr. Oskar Heil, who invented his “Air Motion Transformer” back in 1972, electroacoustic transducers have been developed that are based on improved layouts and new materials. The membrane consists of a lamella-like folded diaphragm whose single folds move according to the alternate current, thus squeezing air in and out. All other loudspeaker drive units, whether they are voice coil driven, electrostatics, piezos or magnetostatics, act like a piston, moving air in a 1:1 ratio. This is undesirable, as the specific weight of air is much lower than that of the driving mechanics. Speaking in terms of electrical engineering one could say there is a bad match between source and load. The A.R.T. principle achieves a 4:1 velocity transformation between driving diaphragm and driven air, i. e. the air moves in and out four times faster than the folds itself are moving. This superior “motor” is responsible for the enormous clarity and transient reproduction that is to be heard from the A.R.T. drive units. A.R.T. tweeters are superior in musical clarity and transient reproduction. They have an above average efficiency of ~93 dB/W/m, a perfectly linear impedance of 3.2 ± 0.05 Ohms, an equally perfect phase response of ± 1° within the used bandwidth, a reasonable directivity characteristic and thermal power handling that exceeds that of 1″ domes by a factor of 2 to 3. Summed up, here is a completely new transducer that has no weaknesses in terms of operation, compatibility, reliability or other electroacoustic specifications. Looking back into loudspeaker history you will not find anything comparable.

M1Active 520 USB feature a large, front-panel, bi-color indicator that indicates presence of signal in blue and clipping in red for instant feedback on system status. Extensive I/O Professional quality analog input jacks are located on the rear. Two balanced-1/4″ inputs enable engineers to connect a stereo source or two mono sources. For convenient recordings, simply connect the stereo output of a mixer. You can create complete recordings with no additional audio interface. The speakers are interconnected using a standard XLR cable for secure, professional connection. For worldwide operation, M1Active 520 USB features a voltage-switchable power supply. USB Digital Audio Interface In addition to their capabilities as traditional monitor loudspeakers, M1Active 520 USB monitors contain a USB audio interface. Connected audio sources such as mic preamps and instruments can be recorded directly into your computer at 16-bit, 44.1 or 48 kHz. Simply plug the USB cable into your computer. No special drivers required. And when it’s time to listen back to your mixes, that same USB cable sends 16-bit, 44.1 or 48 kHz, stereo audio from computer to your M1Act
