Mic Preamp Channel

Drum mic preamp mixer recording question!? Non expert answers also greatly appriciated!?

Q: Hey.

So my drum kit has 3 mics, two over head and one bass.

I usually use xlr to xlr straight into the PA, but this takes up 3 channels.

One of the guitarists in my band has a mixing deck he doesn’t use and we have decided to experiement with xlr to quarter inch leads into this mixing desk before going into the PA, so this will only take 1 channel!

That bit i am up to date with :L

BUT …

This mixing desk has a (yes, old i know) but a tape recorder, so it was made for recording through and making a tape casette! So basically it is a 4 track recorder?

The question is, can i record my drums onto tape AS WELL AS put them through the PA?

Sorry, rather crucial part i know, but i havn’t a clue what the machines called or who manufactured it!

A: Yeah, it sounds like it’s a four track recorder, which raises the question of what output you’re going to use to run to the PA, and making sure that the signal has enough power. This 4 track isn’t going to amplify the sound at all, but it your PA is powered it will probably work.

To answer your question about recording, it would be easier if you knew the make and model of the 4 track so you could look up a tech manual for it, but assuming it works like the other 4 tracks I’ve seen you should be able to record the signal that is going through the mixer without effecting the signal.
