Home recording mxer question?

Q: I plan to start recording vocals from home for hip hop.
I have a behringer b1 condenser mic, stand, XLR cable and pop filter
Im new to the recording scene but know some things.
I have my eyes set on a tapco mix 60 mixer which has phantom power and good preamp and also CHEAP (£32 local store)
However im not sure on how everything will connect?
I know the mic will connect usin XLR but how will the mixer connect to my pc?
And are there any other things im missing?

A: Well thats a pretty decent start, Behringer makes some good ‘consumer’ level products that are actually not that bad. I have a compressor from them thats nothing special but its consistent and works well with my set up.

As far as hook up goes…..
Your Mic (condenser) first needs phantom power (which you said your mixer has) to power it. Make sure the right ‘pick up’ pattern is chosen (if applicable) before you start recording. An XLR cable will connect from the Mic to >> Either a Rack mounted Preamp or in your case a standalone Mixer. If you are going straight to Mixer than you will likely need to also get a Compressor to keep your levels even and controlled. Usually the best way to do this with your type of Setup is just run a ‘Y cable’ (which is basically a Send/Recieve cable with 2 1/4 jacks on 1 end (usually Mono) and 1 1/4 jack on the other end (usually Stereo – which looks like a ‘y’) into your Mixer’s Aux input on the same channel as your Mic.
You did not mention however how your sound is reaching your Recording source. I’m assuming its a Computer. If so, What type of Computer is it, Mac – PC (Windows)? Are you using a USB type Audio converter, or are you using an installed Sound Card? Are you using a Standalone Interface like Mbox? These things are also important and cound change how your Audio gets into your Computer.

For example I use a Emu- (20/40??) soundcard which is installed inside my Computer. It has inputs for 4 main Audio channels – 2 in’s, 2 out’s. So, I send my Mixers in’s and Out’s to the Soundcard and the PC interfaces with the card and allows me to get the audio inside my workstation editors (Acid, FL, Cubase etc) This of course is only 1 of many ways to do that. Setups like Pro Tools LE have big rack mounted interfaced with suped up processing cards etc, and run all the Audio through the computer and into Pro Tools. Go to the Soundcraft Mixers site and take a look at there Compact 4 Mixer – there should be a manual in pdf you can look at, and in that Manual shows you exactly how you can set up a basic mixer with a PC.
