Q: My brother is in a start-up band and I’m looking into mics for them. Are Star or Telex just cheap mics or good quality? What other reasonably priced brands are out there that are of good quality? Thanks!

I can’t figure out how to reply, so let me thank the two of you for your suggestions, and anyone else who comes along. You’ve been very helpful!
A: Why does the mic need to be wireless? I ask because the sound quality on wireless mic’s isn’t very good until you get into the $400+ range. There are a lot of things to look at when making your decision. There are two types of frequency and this is very important. VHF (very high frequency) and UHF (ultra high frequency). There’s less traffic on UHF’s frequency therefore you’ll get a less static or interference and a greater range. With VHF you may get the drive-through at your local burger king interfering with your live set. I’d recommend starting out with a wired mic you could get much better sound quality for what you would pay for a cheap wireless system. Shure makes good mic’s SM58′s/Beta 58′s are industry standards. I love the Sennhieser’s I switched from using shure mic’s to sennhiesers a few years ago after doing some a/b tests with a handful of mics. They make the e835 which is comparable to a 58 and a e935 which is comparable to a beta. I now use the 935 for all of my gigs. If you still have your heart set on a wireless mic Shure makes a PGX24 system which is a wireless 58. It’s about $400. Sennheiser’s makes an entry level wireless mic called the Freeport for about $300, but I’d recommend one of there better systems. And just as an FYI a wireless mic should never be used for recording.
